The Toyota Land Cruiser 79 is the bakkie in the Land Cruiser 70 range: a ladder-frame single cab or double cab on solid axles front and rear, sold in South Africa with the 4.0 V6 petrol, the 4.2 straight-six diesel and, since 2016, the 4.5 V8 turbodiesel, joined by the 2.8 GD-6 four-cylinder auto in 2024. It costs roughly double a Hilux or Ranger of the same year and is bought for the same reasons: farm, mine, overland and safari work where a live axle and a 3.5-tonne tow rating matter more than a screen.
