About

Paul Marsh is an independent 4x4 expedition specialist with more than 30 years of vehicle-based travel on every continent. His first big trip was 18 months through Africa, north to south and back, in a 1979 Hilux he stripped and rebuilt himself. He later drove from Cape Town to Eritrea and back, 70,000 km in 14 months.

He worked in England for 18 years and set up Paul Marsh 4x4 in Cape Town in 2014. He plans the trip with you, chooses the base vehicle, designs the layout and runs the build with workshops he picks. Then he trains you and supports you on the road.

Much of his work is on double cabs. He developed the Land Cruiser 79 double cab fleet for Safari Drive, and built and prepared the TechPro Safari fleet of 79 double cabs and Hilux double cabs. For Africa, he recommends a double cab Land Cruiser or a Hilux.

Does he work on bakkies?

Hilux or Land Cruiser for an Africa trip?

He recommends either a double cab Land Cruiser or a Hilux. In a 2020 interview he said the Hilux is not as strong as the double cab Land Cruiser, but fills a niche because it comes as an automatic and suits about 3 people. Interview, part 2
