Hilux Legend editions (Legend 40, 45, 50, Legend RS) are the premium-trim double cabs South Africa buys most, the 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Legend is the single most-traded premium bakkie in the country.

The Toyota Hilux has been South Africa's best-selling bakkie for decades, which is why its used market is the deepest in the country. The current era is the GD-6 (2016 onward; 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesels, including the Legend and GR-Sport editions), while the D-4D generation before it (2.5 and 3.0 D-4D, roughly 2005 to 2016) remains the workhorse favourite for farm and fleet use.
