Best Bakkie Under R300,000 in South Africa (2026)

R300,000 buys a 2017 double cab with about 170,000 km. R400,000 buys a 2021 with about 119,000 km. Here is what each bakkie gives you for the money, the six worth buying and the ones to walk away from.

R300,000 is a tight budget for a used double cab. Prices here are asking prices on live listings in October 2026, not selling prices.

Right now 2,670 used double cabs ask R300,000 or less. The typical one is a 2017 with about 170,000 km. Between R300,000 and R400,000 there are 2,247. The typical one there is a 2021 with about 119,000 km, and 69% are automatics (37% under R300,000).

At this money a full service history matters more than the badge. See them all on live listings.

The newest bakkie for the money is a P-Series or a Pik Up. The Amarok is your best shot at an automatic 4x4, but it is the oldest. A Hilux at this money is typically a 2012 with about 258,000 km (80 listings). Locals call that gap the “Toyota tax”.

The extra R100,000 buys about two years and 30,000 to 60,000 fewer km on most models. The new-shape Ranger, built from late 2022, is still out of reach: a typical 2023 asks about R550,000 (500 listings). For prices by year, see the Ranger, D-Max, P-Series and Amarok price guides.

Nearly half the double cabs under R300,000 are Rangers. That choice lets you bargain hard.

The cheapest double cabs, used and new

The cheapest used double cab is the Nissan NP300 Hardbody. There are 98 under R300,000, typically asking R170,000 for a 2017 with about 170,000 km. A basic Hardbody scored zero stars for adult safety in a 2018 Global NCAP and AA crash test.

The cheapest new or demo double cab is a Peugeot Landtrek 1.9D Professional asking R299,900. Next is the JAC T8 from R319,900. No new Ranger, D-Max, Navara, Amarok or Triton double cab asks R400,000 or less. Our Chinese double cabs guide compares the new budget options.

The six best bakkies for R300,000 to R400,000

Ford Ranger 2.2 (2017 to 2021): the most choice

R300,000 buys a 2019 with about 153,000 km (431 listings). R400,000 buys a 2021 with about 121,000 km (357 listings).

The 2.2 has a timing chain and the old six-speed gearbox. The weak spots are injectors, the turbo and the EGR cooler (a part that sends exhaust gas back into the engine). That cooler costs about R11,000. Budget for injectors and a turbo at 200,000 km. Read Ranger problems by generation and browse Rangers for sale.

Isuzu D-Max 250 and 300 (2018 to 2021): the safe pick

R300,000 buys a 2019 with about 139,000 km (151 listings). R400,000 buys a 2022 with about 98,000 km (139 listings).

Old hands run them past 300,000 km. Listen for CV joints clicking at full lock. At this price it is nearly always a 4x2 manual. A 2020 or 2021 is still the old shape, so do not pay new-shape money. See D-Max listings and the D-Max market page.

GWM P-Series (2022 and 2023): the newest auto for the money

R300,000 buys a 2022 with about 118,500 km (82 listings). R400,000 buys a 2023 with about 81,000 km (121 listings), nearly all automatics.

You get a 2.0 turbodiesel with an eight-speed ZF automatic. The launch warranty was 5 years or 100,000 km, so ask GWM in writing what cover is left on that VIN. Resale is the open question. See P-Series listings, the P300 and our resale guide.

Mahindra Pik Up (2022 to 2024): the lowest km, and real 4x4 kit

R300,000 buys a 2022 with about 100,300 km (51 listings). R400,000 buys a 2024 or 2025 with about 39,000 km (26 listings).

The 4x4s have low range, an extra set of very low gears for rough ground. From the S6 up they get a rear diff that locks by itself. New ones had a 4 year or 120,000 km warranty, so ask for the first registration date. Mahindra says a new Pik Up will launch by April 2027, which may pull used prices down. See Pik Up listings and the Karoo.

Nissan Navara (2020 to 2022): the one people forget

R300,000 buys a 2020 with about 116,000 km (51 listings). R400,000 buys a 2022 with about 96,000 km (61 listings).

Look for the 2.5 built in Rosslyn, Pretoria, from June 2021, not the imported 2.3 twin-turbo. The 2.5 came with a 6 year or 150,000 km warranty, which can pass to you if a Nissan dealer did the servicing. Dealers cleared the last new ones at R150,000 or more off, so offer low. See Navara listings and the Navara market page.

VW Amarok (2016 to 2018): most comfort, most 4x4

R300,000 buys a 2016 with about 185,000 km (61 listings). R400,000 buys a 2018 with about 152,000 km (71 listings). Most are automatic 4x4s.

It drives like a car but has the highest km here. The 2.0 engines use a timing belt. On early ones a worn drive belt could take it out, so VW fitted a new belt cover. Ask for the belt invoice and check the newer cover is on. See Amarok listings.

At this money an Amarok will be a 2.0, not the V6 in this photo, so ask for the timing belt invoice. Photo: Volkswagen South Africa

Why no Hilux?

It holds its value best, which is the problem here. At R400,000 a typical Hilux double cab is a 2018 with about 168,000 km (201 listings). Our Hilux GD-6 vs D-4D guide shows which to look for.

What to avoid at this price

  • A Ranger 3.2 with no invoice for the EGR and oil coolers. If they leak, the head gasket goes. Ford dealers have quoted R110,000 to R220,000 for a new engine.
  • A 2019 to 2022 Ranger 2.0 with no timing belt invoice. The belt runs in oil and costs R10,000 to R18,000 at Ford.
  • A Ranger 2.0 ten-speed without its recall fix. Bakkies sold from July 2018 to February 2020 are covered. Check by VIN with Ford.
  • “2.0D” Ranger adverts that do not say bi-turbo. Most are the single-turbo, which asks about R50,000 less.
  • Any bakkie that looks too cheap. Wound-back clocks happen.

Many banks will not finance a bakkie much over ten years old. Our finance guide shows the monthly cost.

How to check a bakkie at this price

  1. Get the dealer service printout and a recall printout by VIN. It beats stamps in a book and catches a wound-back clock.
  2. Ask for the invoice for the known problem. Coolers on a 3.2, the belt on a 2.0, injectors at 200,000 km.
  3. Start it cold with the bonnet up. Scan for fault codes. Milky sludge under the oil cap means walk away.
  4. Match the VIN, engine number and papers. Police clearance is free.

If you are not mechanical, pay for an inspection. Keep R20,000 to R50,000 back for the first big job. Our ex-fleet checklist covers the rest.

So which one?

  • Most choice: a Ranger 2.2.
  • Safest bet for work: a D-Max, if a manual 4x2 is fine.
  • Newest auto: a P-Series.
  • Lowest km and real 4x4 kit: a Pik Up.
  • Warranty maybe left: a Rosslyn Navara.
  • Auto 4x4 comfort: an Amarok.
